Two software bugs. One 25-cent deposit. 46,100,000,000 fake Bitcoin. That is not a typo. That is the Symbiosis “Bitcoin Bridge” post-mortem, and it is the single best argument for self-custody you will read all year.
Here is what happened. On September 11, an attacker deposited 330 satoshis — about a quarter — into Symbiosis’s bridge. Over roughly four minutes, using 12 bogus deposits across BNB Chain, Ethereum and Rootstock, they minted about 46.1 billion syBTC tokens. Bitcoin’s entire supply is 21 million. The attacker printed more than TWO THOUSAND times the total Bitcoin that will ever exist.
How? The bridge looked at the WRONG PART of a Bitcoin transaction when deciding who had sent the money. That let the attacker convince the system they were simultaneously an approved depositor AND the bridge administrator. Administrator access let them push the minimum fee below zero. Then a second bug SUBTRACTED a negative fee from the deposit — which in math means it ADDED to the deposit. Suddenly a quarter was worth whatever number the attacker wanted to type.
Think about that. The “bitcoin bridge” could not even read a Bitcoin transaction correctly. The thing that is supposed to move your money across chains choked on the most basic property of the asset it claims to represent. And when it broke, it didn’t just break for one person. It printed tickets for 2,000 lifetimes of Bitcoin.
Now the part they don’t want you to notice. The attacker minted 46.1 BILLION syBTC and walked away with about $336,000. Liquidity providers lost roughly $770,000. Why the gap? Because unbacked bridge tokens are coat-check tickets. You can mint 46 billion tickets, but you can only steal the jackets that are actually hanging in the room. The fake Bitcoin was never Bitcoin — it was a promise, and the promise was worth exactly what the room next door held in real coins.
That is the entire wrapped-Bitcoin economy in one parable. WBTC. cbBTC. syBTC. “Yield-bearing Bitcoin.“ Bitcoin on a bridge. Every single one is an IOU on somebody else’s word, somebody else’s multisig, somebody else’s admin key. You are not holding Bitcoin. You are holding a receipt, and the receipt printer just glitched 46 billion times in four minutes.
Real Bitcoin does not work like this. There is no bridge. There is no admin. There is no deposit form that can change the supply, because the supply was written at genesis and no negative fee on Earth can add to it. Nobody can mint your coins out of thin air because your coins are not in their room. They are in YOUR pocket. That is the entire point. That is why the 21 million cap is sacred. The day you hand your Bitcoin to a bridge, you are trading the hardest money ever invented for an IOU issued by a smart contract that cannot even parse a transaction.
Symbiosis says its Bitcoin Bridge stays offline while the software is rewritten and independently audited. Good. But the next bridge, and the next one after that, will have the same disease: someone else’s keys, someone else’s bugs, someone else’s “we will make you whole” announcement.
