You hold a twenty in your hand and you assume it means something. It doesn’t. Not on its own.
Francisco d’Anconia gave a speech about money, and buried inside his sixty-page radio takeover in Atlas Shrugged sits the cleanest explanation of the subject ever written by a novelist. Rand called it Francisco d’Anconia’s money speech, delivered at a wedding to a drunk who sneered that money is the root of all evil. Francisco takes the phrase apart in front of him.
Money is a claim on goods that already exist. When you accept a dollar for your day’s work, you accept it on the expectation that some other producer will honor it later with a loaf of bread, a gallon of gas, a night in a motel in Cheyenne. Paper carries no value. It carries a promise from the men who produce. Destroy the producers and your paper turns into what it physically is: cotton and linen with dead men’s faces printed on it.
Francisco hammers the point that money demands you trade value for value. No looting. No fraud. You cannot force a man to sell you his goods for your green rectangles unless he agrees the rectangles are worth it. The looters hate money and love the printing press because it lets them acquire goods without producing anything. The printing press is counterfeiting with a marble building around it.
Consider what the Federal Reserve did between 2020 and 2022. It expanded the money supply by roughly forty percent. The goods didn’t multiply by forty percent. So each dollar you saved bought less, and the men who got the new dollars first — the Treasury, the banks, the primary dealers — spent them before prices caught up. You paid the tax. You never voted for it.
Francisco says gold cannot be printed into existence by a decree. A miner earns it out of the ground. That’s the whole argument for sound money in one sentence, delivered decades before economists dressed it up in charts.
Money is a tool of exchange among producers, or it is a weapon in the hands of thieves.
Bitcoin is the first technology that makes Francisco’s vision real. A money that cannot be printed, inflated, or debased by decree. A money earned by proof of work — literally mined out of digital ground.
Rand wrote this in 1957. Bitcoin launched in 2009. The problem was identified decades before the solution arrived.
