On Friday, Poland’s Sejm voted 241-198 to override President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of a crypto regulation bill. Three abstained. They needed 266. They fell 25 votes short. The veto stands — the third time Nawrocki has killed this legislation, arguing it was overregulation, a cost burden, and a blank check for authorities to block websites.
So who was screaming loudest for the bill? Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government. And what was their justification? The collapse of Zondacrypto.
Zondacrypto — formerly BitBay — was a Polish crypto exchange. Its operator, BB Trade Estonia, was declared bankrupt in August. Prosecutors estimate customer losses at no less than 350 million zloty, about $95 million. They’re investigating suspected fraud and money laundering. The probe was merged with a criminal investigation into the 2022 disappearance of Zondacrypto’s founder, Sylwester Suszek. The founder of the exchange that lost your money LITERALLY VANISHED, and the exchange went bankrupt.
And here’s where it gets dirty.
Ahead of Friday’s vote, Tusk personally disclosed excerpts of witness testimony from the Zondacrypto investigation. According to Tusk, a key witness alleged a 2 million zloty — $550,000 — payment arrangement involving a foundation linked to Poland’s former Justice Minister, Zbigniew Ziobro. In separate testimony, the same witness alleged an unnamed person promised to secure a presidential pardon if the witness was convicted.
Let that sink in. The government that wants to hand the financial regulator power over your coins is simultaneously leaking testimony that its own political circle trades in half-million-dollar payments and presidential pardons.

The state watched an unregulated exchange swallow $95 million of its citizens’ money for YEARS. It did nothing. The founder vanished. The customers ate the loss.
