You have been renting your digital life. Your photos live on Google’s servers. Your files live in Dropbox. Your movies stream from someone else’s data center, and every bit of it is scanned, profiled, and billed back to you monthly. The cloud is just someone else’s computer, and you pay rent to be watched.
I brought mine home. An Umbrel the size of a paperback now holds my photos, my files, and my media. My phone backs up to my living room instead of a warehouse. No subscription, no scanning, no terms-of-service change locking me out of my own memories.
One little box, 300 apps
Umbrel Home is palm-sized and silent. Umbrel Pro takes up to 32TB if you hoard like I do. Either way you open a browser, install what you need in one click, and it runs: photo backup from your iPhone camera roll, file sync across your devices, your movie library streaming to the couch, even full Ubuntu or Android in a browser tab.
Family works too. Everyone gets their own account and private folder, and you share only what you choose. Try getting that deal from Big Tech without paying per seat per month.
Why home beats their servers
Because their servers fail and take you with them. When AWS sneezes, exchange outages lock users out of their funds, and your Drive and Photos wobble on the same shaky foundation. My Umbrel does not care about their outage schedule.
And custody is custody, whether it is coins or photos. Learn how Bitcoin ETFs differ from holding your own keys and you already understand the principle: holding the IOU is never holding the thing. The same failure modes apply everywhere, right up to the U.S. government’s own Bitcoin custody disaster. If they can lose track, your cloud provider can lose you.
